We have been SO stressed out lately. There are a million things going on in our life right now and it's been way too hectic. This smoothie has been a great tool for managing stress when dealing with big life changes. It tastes great too, so that's always good! I never really understood how much of an impact food has on our hormones until I had severe postpartum depression after my daughter was born. I spent countless hours researching this topic and adjusted my diet and supplementation. It was the first time I had experienced healing through diet. I'm sure a lot of people will read that and think it's crazy hippie nonsense. I honestly don't care because I know how sad and broken I felt inside, and I know that changed once I increased these foods (and many more!) in my diet. There is a reason these foods are called "good mood foods."
Here's why this smoothie will naturally calm your nerves...
Banana- this wonderful fruit contains the amino acid, tryptophan, a brain chemical that helps regulate mood. They also contain vitamin B6. Having a low level of this vitamin has been linked to depression.
Cacao- I know, right?! Who isn't rejoicing over this information? Dark chocolate or raw cacao is not only high in antioxidants, but has been proven to reduce the stress hormone, cortisol. It's a natural anti-depressant and also improves cognition and mental health.
Spinach- this super food contains folic acid which reduces fatigue and alleviates depression. It also boosts the immune system which is important when feeling stressed.
Flax seed- these lovely seeds are full of omega-3 fatty acids which decrease anxiety, sleep disorders, and depression.
Peanut butter- Peanuts are also a good source of tryptophan which is an essential amino acid for serotonin production. There is also something to be said about the healthy fat found in peanuts. A low fat diet has been scientifically linked to depression, anxiety, and obesity. 60% of the brain is made up of fat... If you're not eating healthy fats, you're definitely not going to be feeling well mentally and emotionally.
