I am enjoying this wonderful smoothie as I sit down to write this post with a full tummy. We've spent all week indulging in delectable and festive foods, and now we need to recover. I'm not one of those health-nuts who skips the mashed potatoes at Christmas dinner. I live for mashed potatoes, I'll be totally honest. But, now that the holidays are winding down, I'd like the bloat to go too! One of the best ways to de-bloat is to replenish with a smoothie. You may be thinking that you're bloated because you're holding on to water, and you should cut back on drinking it. It's actually the opposite, and you should be re-hydrating with lots of water. Of course a smoothie loaded with the following ingredients will benefit you too! Here's why...
Cucumber: This crunchy veggie is a natural diuretic which helps flush out excess water weight.
Banana: This is beneficial because they are loaded with potassium which helps relieve water retention.
Lemon: If you can stomach this tart fruit, add it to warm water or smoothies to sooth your digestive system. Lemon is a natural diuretic and can reduce the amount of salt retained in the body.
Celery: This is a must! Celery has a high water content which purges the body of toxins and decreases fluid retention.
Pure Coconut Water: This is quickly becoming the new sports drink. Coconut water, or "nature's energy drink," is loaded with important electrolytes like calcium, potassium, magnesium, and chloride. These are key minerals to fight bloating because they restore our systems back to proper function and help balance our body's pH level. When the sodium and potassium levels in our bodies are imbalanced, our brain signals our kidneys to retain water. We can combat this naturally by adding pure coconut water to our smoothies!
Total time: 3 minutes | Yields: 1 Smoothie
- 1 celery stalk
- 1 cucumber
- 1/2 lemon, peeled
- 1/2 a green apple, cored
- 1/2 a banana
- 1 cup pure coconut water
- handful of ice
- Prep your fruits: peel half a lemon and cut the core out of the apple.
- Place all the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth- enjoy!
- Make sure to remove the seeds from the lemon before blending. If you are sensitive to the tartness of lemons, use a quarter of a lemon instead of half.
- Look for coconut water that doesn't have added sweeteners. Coconut water should be the only ingredient!
